Chapter 11

Day 30 of the re-emerged Hat Island pack, Monday, July 7

Abby wasn’t picking up much from the mate bond, or from her wolf, which quite frankly worried her more. Breakfast was early — it wasn’t light out yet — but Abby didn’t even look at the view. Okami was cooking, and he was focused inward. Mei wasn’t there, she must have gone home, and Abby was grateful that she hadn’t been there to hear her scream. Jake was watching her carefully, and she avoided his eyes. She wasn’t sure how much he had gotten from their bond. She didn’t want to know.

“Come,” Akihiro said. “I promised you a run.”

She caught a whiff of amusement from someone. Haru Ito, she thought, and she glared at him. But he wasn’t looking at her. He was staring at Akihiro and the small scar on his neck. She didn’t know what that was about, and quite frankly she didn’t care. But a run sounded good.

A van waited in the basement parking garage. A driver, two guards, Okami, Jake, Haru, her and Akihiro. It was a silent drive. “Bridle Trail Park?” she said when she recognized the place they pulled into. “But it’s a leash-only park.”

“It’s not open yet,” Akihiro said. “Tanaka Corporation makes a large donation each year, and in return we have full use of the area from sunup to 8 a.m. Dogs off leash, no questions asked.”

“Nice,” she said. “I love this place.” Everyone but the driver and one guard were undressing and shifting. She took a deep breath and then she did, too. She still didn’t like being naked around shifters, although she knew it didn’t bother them. Especially today she didn’t like it, she thought grimly, but she set it all aside and let her wolf out to run.

And run she did. Abby knew these trails; it was a favorite walk for her and the dogs on a Sunday morning. And now she ran ahead, letting the men catch up if they could. Her wolf laughed at the thought.

Wait, Abby, Tanaka ordered through their bond. You do not run in front of me, but behind.

She laughed. Her wolf was puzzled. He doesn’t want to chase? she asked. Mate? Doesn’t want to play?

He’s an old man, she told her wolf, maybe he’s forgotten how. She felt Tanaka’s fury at that, but her wolf laughed and ran faster. She glanced to her right. Tanaka was there, running full out. And she increased her speed. She could feel Jake was where he always was, to the left and just behind her. Ito was similarly positioned to Tanaka; the guard was lagging behind. She didn’t know where Okami was.

Abby took them on her favorite loop through the looming conifers, veering off the established path to jump over moss-covered logs, and then back onto the path. The last time she’d come here, this four-mile walk had taken her an hour, and she had been exhausted for the rest of the day. It had been a while since she even attempted it.
